COMMISSION
For educators, researchers, creatives and cultural producers

Deadline: Monday 14th July 2025

We are inviting proposals for three new commissions that will explore and deepen public understanding of the legacies of the Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans (TTEA), with a particular focus on London.

This opportunity is for anyone passionate about this work — whether you are developing a creative project, designing an educational tool, or leading community-based research or storytelling. We especially welcome proposals from individuals, collectives, and organisations from African and Caribbean heritage communities; emerging artists and underrepresented practitioners; and those with lived, creative, or professional experience in this area. We’re particularly keen to hear from projects led by — or working in collaboration with — young people aged 18–30.

Why this matters

This commissioning strand is part of the History for Our Future Learning Network, a programme led by HOUSE OF DREAD and commissioned by the Mayor of London. Informed by months of collaborative learning and feedback from our network members, the commissions respond to clear needs:

  • to create emotionally grounded, culturally relevant, and youth-focused learning tools

  • to connect histories of TTEA to London’s contemporary cultural and spatial landscape

  • to support independent, community-rooted practice that often lacks visibility or resourcing

What we’re looking for

We are commissioning three projects that:

  • Engage directly with the legacies of TTEA

  • Are grounded in London’s histories, places, or communities

  • Include a tangible, shareable output (e.g. toolkit, micro-module, zine, walk, workshop plan)

  • Promote learning, care, and exchange

You can propose new work or adapt an existing idea. We welcome creative, participatory, and experimental approaches — from zines and digital storytelling to classroom materials and public history projects.

Each commission includes:

  • £3,000 commission fee

  • A peer learning ‘Tools in Practice’ session to share work-in-progress

  • Visibility via HOUSE OF DREAD and GLA platforms

  • Support with accessibility and legacy formatting
